Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG makes the planning process fit for the future
In summer 2015, KVB controlling started the initiative to restructure the planning management which had evolved over time. In November 2015 the decision was made: SAP BI Integrated Planning will be the future solution. Shortly afterwards, the joint, efficient and successful project with PIKON started – the mapping of cost centre and internal order planning with SAP Integrated Planning (IP) as well as the retraction of planning figures into the existing SAP ERP system.
About Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG
With well over 3,000 employees and around 900,000 passengers every working day, Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG (KVB) is one of the largest public transport companies in Germany. In addition to passenger transport as a central role, KVB ensures that the vehicles (city railways, buses) are available to passengers day after day.
Initial Situation
In summer 2015, KVB controlling started the initiative to restructure the planning management which had evolved over time. The aim was to standardise cost centre and internal order planning in a new, centralised, future-proof solution. Previously, this requirement was mapped in very complex Excel spreadsheets and then consolidated in SAP ERP by the controlling department.
Our Solution
Within the IT concept, the architecture, planning functionalities and planning screens were defined in accordance with the requirements. Key user feedback was collected at an early stage and at regular intervals during the course of the implementation phase. Thanks to the close collaboration, the desired planning process could be further optimised.
The activities included:
- Concept development (specialist background, architecture, data model and
- reports)
- Development of a data model based on SAP standard data sources for controlling, profit centre accounting
- Generation of BEx queries and analysis for office workbooks (AO)
- Generation and approval of load plans
- Employee training (IT and departments)
- Roll-out support
Customer benefits
Thanks to the decision to use SAP IP, KVB AG gained the benefit that planning and reporting are now mapped in a standardised system. Central control of the planning process by the department creates security and independence from IT. The option of entering your own comments in the planning screen, e.g. if the planning department’s planning figures differ from the central guideline, creates transparency and saves unnecessary coordination meetings.
