SAP Business Data Cloud: The next big thing?

Content

Data, data, data – sometimes it feels like we’re drowning in it, doesn’t it? And just when you’ve gotten used to one SAP solution, along comes the next one. Do you remember when SAP BW was considered the ultimate go-to? Well, times have changed, and SAP is now introducing the Business Data Cloud. But is this truly a gamechanger, or just another flashy name for something we’ve seen before? Let’s take a closer look. Buckle up – things are about to get data-driven!

What is the Business Data Cloud?

Imagine the SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) as a massive, ultra-modern data tower floating in the cloud. It’s designed to bring together all your valuable business data—whether it comes from S/4HANA, a non-SAP application, or even the depths of Excel spreadsheets.

BDC promises not only to store this data in a unified way but also to intelligently connect it and provide it through a single, consistent layer. Being cloud-native means (hopefully) you’ll spend less time worrying about the technical infrastructure in the background and more time focusing on the data itself.

The Evolution of SAP Data Solutions: A Quick Look Back

Let’s take a quick, slightly nostalgic look into the past. First, there was SAP BW—the classic among SAP’s data solutions. Solid, reliable, but perhaps not quite agile enough to meet today’s demands. Then came SAP Datasphere, essentially its sportier successor, shifting much of the workload to the cloud and offering a range of modern features.

And now, SAP Business Data Cloud enters the stage. Is it the ultimate successor, a complementary solution, or are all three performing a complex tango together? As is often the case with SAP, the answer isn’t entirely straightforward. BDC positions itself as an overarching platform that leverages the power of the cloud and promises even broader data integration capabilities.

Core Features of the SAP Business Data Cloud

SAP Business Data Cloud offers a range of powerful features designed to help companies make more efficient use of their data—without needing to reinvent the wheel. At its core, the platform aims to bring together data from various sources, make it understandable, and turn it into actionable insights.

Data Integration across system boundaries

Whether it’s SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, or third-party systems like Salesforce—the Business Data Cloud connects diverse systems to create a seamless view of all relevant data. Thanks to modern concepts like data virtualisation, the data doesn’t necessarily have to be physically moved. Instead, it remains in its original location and is linked virtually.

Semantic layer for unified understanding

A central feature of the platform is the so-called semantic layer. It ensures that data is not only technically accurate but also presented in a way that is understandable and consistent from a business perspective.

Self-Service Analytics for business users

With the integration of SAP Analytics Cloud, business departments can directly access data and create their own reports or dashboards—without needing any programming skills. This empowers users, reduces the workload on IT, and significantly shortens the time from question to insight.

Artificial Intelligence as an analytics booster

AI capabilities such as automated pattern recognition and forecasting help extract valuable insights from data. This enables early identification of trends, detection of anomalies, and informed decision-making—data-driven and future-oriented.

Components of the SAP Business Data Cloud

Der Aufbau der SAP Business Data Cloud

SAP Business Data Cloud is not a standalone product, but rather a combination of proven and modern solutions, perfectly integrated. Each component plays a specific role in the overall architecture. Together, they enable a consistent, flexible, and future-proof approach to managing enterprise data. Below are the key elements of the Business Data Fabric:

  • SAP BW (Business Warehouse) PCE
The classic among SAP analytics tools, SAP BW serves as a structured data warehouse for historical and consolidated business data. Many companies have been using it for years—whether as an on-premise version or as BW/4HANA in the cloud. Even though today’s data landscape is more flexible, BW remains a reliable cornerstone, especially for standardised and audited reporting.
  • SAP Datasphere
Datasphere is the modern evolution of SAP BW, offering a significantly expanded feature set. It enables data from a wide range of sources to be connected—without having to physically move it. At its core is a central semantic layer that ensures a consistent understanding of data, regardless of its source system. This makes it the central backbone of the Business Data Cloud.
  • SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)
As the main frontend, SAP Analytics Cloud allows users to easily create dashboards, reports, and visualisations. Whether it’s self-service analytics, planning, or simulation—SAC makes complex data analysis accessible even to non-technical users and is directly connected to the data sources within the Business Data Cloud.
  • Databricks & other Partner Solutions
Openness is a core principle of the Business Data Cloud. That’s why platforms like Databricks can be integrated to support big data scenarios or AI applications—enabling deeper analytics and greater flexibility.

Insight Apps

One of the highlights of the SAP Business Data Cloud—often only noticed at second glance—are the so-called Insight Apps. These are pre-built, ready-to-use applications that support business departments in quickly responding to business-relevant questions, without the need for complex projects or custom data models upfront.

What exactly are Insight Apps?

Insight Apps are small, focused analytical applications optimised for specific business areas or processes. They are based on best practices and access central data sources within the SAP Business Data Cloud—for example, financial data, HR metrics, or procurement information. With the push of a button, they deliver clear visualisations, KPIs, and trend insights.

Data Products

In SAP Business Data Cloud, data products are organised, reusable, and business-ready data sets tailored to specific use cases. Think of them as “packaged” data assets that are immediately available for use. A data product could be, for instance, a consolidated customer view, a set of product performance metrics, or a financial report. The key is that these products are orchestrated from various sources via the Business Data Fabric and enriched with semantic context. This makes them easier to access and interpret for business users. Data products enhance data literacy across the organisation, accelerate analytical processes, and enable more efficient, data-driven decision-making.

Conclusion: Hype or Real Progress?

The SAP Business Data Cloud certainly comes with a big name that might at first sound like just another marketing hype. But behind it lies a clear and understandable shift:

  • Away from rigid data models and isolated silos,
  • Towards open, integrated, and intelligent data landscapes.

For companies still working with outdated systems, manual Excel evaluations, or isolated data silos, the Business Data Cloud could very well be a real gamechanger. Is it the next big thing? Maybe. But it’s definitely a logical step in the evolution of SAP’s data landscape—and a clear signal: data should finally become easier to use.
